Hi,

I am about to put this firefly back on the water. Do you have any history. I bought it of Ebay a couple of years ago for £20 having been in storage for a number of years. It was an ex University boat destined for the bonfire before being saved y the previous owner. One question. Across the Hog in smaller numbers is 2688, is that a hull number?

many thanks

Chris - your Firefly was built in 1960 and sold to her first owner, a Mr Barker, 13 July. Built, of course, to the Mark l layout with terylene sails, only just introduced to replace cotton sails, made by Ratsey and Lapthorn of Cowes. She weighed 160lb, the class minimum at the time. Sadly, no address for the first owner, and no suggestion, from our records that she has been owned by a university. Other recorded owners/members of the NFA lived in Stoke on Trent and Colchester. Sevenoaks School, still a hot bed of Firefly racing seem to have owned her in the early '80's.

Her name seems to be 'Cross Product'

The other number is, as you think, the hull/shell number, a stock control record at the Fairey Marine workshop, but the Fairey ledger notes the number as 2588 rather than the number you quote. You might be lucky enough still to have the original brass builder's plate fastened inside the transom, both numbers will be engraved on it.

Is she still in half decent shape after her storage? What are your plans for her? Where will you sail her from?

Best regards! Peter Lanham ... NFA BoatSearch

ps - did I respond to a similar enquiry Spring last year?

Peter,

Thanks. You might have but I couldnt find yr reply on the forum. Poor lass was a bit bashed about but has dried out. She was painted inside and out. Now all paint is removed and am just revarnishing and using west on any soft spots and to repair the transom joints to hull. Overall she is solid but there have been a couple of crush/laminate cracks that I hope gallons of varnish over the dry hull and a good few layers of paint will keep the water out. Centre case seeems pretty solid and isn't falling out. She will be sailed at spinnaker for fun and to teach daughter to sail. Chris
