Hi all, I've got a firefly which has a stamped plate with "Craft Mouldings Ltd. Hull No 8071" on it.
also a sticker with "supplied by VIC LEWIS BOATS" under the bow.
It requies sails and I would like to know what the sail number should be.
Any other history of this boat would be appreciated.

Mark - thanks for your enquiry!

I look after many of the Firefly building and membership records, but sadly I do not have much information regarding Fireflies built by Craft Mouldings. This company, trading from Morton in Marsh, Gloucestershire, was appointed in the mid 1970's by the RYA as the offical grp class constructor, and the company built a sizeable number of boats for the class. They were sturdy and practical, mostly all grp, but some with wooden decks to the Mark ll/lll layout. The hulls featured a built in bouyancy tank, half height under the foredeck, wooden slatted side benches with bouyancy bags strapped under the benches, and more under the decks forward of the transom.

The boats were, I think, mainly fitted out and marketed by Vic Lewis Boats in Birmingham. I rather fear that neither businesses are still trading.

I am afraid that I cannot relate the Craft Moulding reference to a sail number, but she will be in the F3400 region. In a perfect world, the sail number will be carved into the wooden thwart, perhaps in the hog, or inside the transom. Worth a detailed check! Is her number marked on any of her gear, cover, paddle etc? I guess she does not have any paperwork? Class Certificate perhaps?

There is a fighting chance I might be able to track down her identity from her name, hopefully painted on her transom? Or, from whom did you acquire her? Do you know where she might have spent any of her past life? Is she all grp or with wooden decks? What is her hull colour?

Please let me know, and I will gladly trawl thro our records and see what I can turn up!

Is she in good shape? Where will you sail her?

As a last resort, the RYA will issue a new sail number to you (at a cost - those Olympic medals have to be paid for somehow!) and you will end up with the latest number, F4000+ + on your older Firefly!

After speaking to the owner of this all grp Firefly and checking our class records, it would seem her number is F3520, built 1979, perhaps 1980. White hull, coloured decks and interior.
